When to deviate from defaults

Cluster Allocation Across File Systems

Default cluster sizes scale with volume size: 4 KB for < 256 MB, 32 KB for typical use, up to 32 MB for very large media volumes. exFAT is the default for SDXC cards and is widely used for cross-platform external drives because both Windows and macOS support it natively.

APFS allocation blocks

APFS uses 4 KB allocation blocks by default and supports variable allocation block sizes. The copy-on-write design means allocation blocks are written to new locations rather than overwritten in place, with metadata trees pointing to the current allocations.
